Driver Involved in One Collision, Killed in Second Crash

While at the scene of the first crash, he walked into the path of an oncoming SUV, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man died Monday (May 14) when he stepped in front of an oncoming SUV while at the scene of an earlier traffic crash, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

William Costello, 77, of Tampa, died at the scene.

Deputies said Mr. Costello was involved in a traffic crash about 5:30 a.m. on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard at USF Pine Drive. When deputies arrived on scene to investigate the initial crash, Mr. Costello walked east from the northbound median lane of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard within the intersection to retrieve information from his vehicle for the crash report. His vehicle was located on USF Pine Drive east of the intersection.

While walking towards his vehicle, he failed to see a black 2017 Kia Sorrento being driven by Adrianne Ojeda, 20, of Temple Terrace, who was traveling northbound on Bruce B. Downs in the center through lane. Mr. Costello was struck and killed by the Kia within the intersection.
