INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – A Largo man died this morning (Feb. 11) of injuries he received when when his car overturned after he lost control of it on the Indian Rocks Causeway, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Bruce P. Kobel, 73, of Largo, was airlifted to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries. He died there at 11:02 a.m., deputies said.

The crash happened about 8:22 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 9) on the Indian Rocks Causeway east of Gulf Boulevard in Indian Rocks Beach.

Mr. Kobel was driving his 2008 Lincoln Towncar west over the Indian Rocks Causeway when he passed a vehicle on the right and then changed lanes back into the left lane, losing control of his vehicle.

Investigators said Mr. Kobel’s car skidded sideways and went up onto the raised concrete median. The car struck two trees and overturned before coming to final rest on top of a downed tree on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash; however, impairment does not.
