HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A driver died this morning when he crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 41, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The name of the dead man is being withheld until his next of kin are notified. The other driver, Herbert H. Beckum, Jr., 59, of Dover, was taken to South Bay Hospital with minor injuries. Troopers said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The crash happened about 5:45 a.m. today (Jan. 15) on U.S. 41 south of Gulf City Road in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said the deceased man was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima north on U.S. 41 when, for unknown reasons, he crossed over into oncoming traffic and was hit by a 1999 Dodge Ram driven by Beckum. Both vehicles continued traveling onto the outside shoulder and hit a guardrail. Upon impact, the Nissan broke apart and pieces of the car hit the Dodge, which caught fire.
