Driver Dies When Tire Blows Out on I-4

One passenger was seriously injured in the crash, FHP troopers said. The other two passengers suffered minor injuries.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man died Saturday (April 20) when his SUV crashed after a tire blew out on I-4, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Kilbert Medina Rijos, 31, of Tampa, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to troopers.

Jennifer Rodriguez, 35, of Tampa, one of his passengers, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Troopers said she was not wearing a seat belt.

Two other passengers, Elliot Santana, 13, and Mia Medina, 1, both of Tampa, were taken to Lakeland Regional with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 6:05 p.m. on westbound I-4 at about mile marker 16 in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Rijos was driving a 2005 Chevrolet SUV west on I-4 west of Branch Forbes Road when one of the tires blew out. Mr. Rijosr lost control of the SUV, which entered the center median and overturned. Mr. Rijos and Rodriguez were both thrown from the vehicle.
