It is unclear if alcohol was involved in the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – An Immokalee man died Thursday (May 24) of injuries he received in a head-on crash on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Gerardo Yslas, 30, of Immokalee, died at Tampa General Hospital where he was taken after the crash. The other driver, Ariel Valera-Ramirez, 28, of Tampa, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital.

The crash happened about 6 p.m. on U.S. 301 north of Lightfoot Road in Hillsborough County.

Mr. Yslas was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima south on U.S. 301 when he crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head on with a 1993 dump truck driven by Valera-Ramirez.

After the impact, troopers said, the truck left the roadway and traveled onto the east shoulder where it hit a fence before coming to a stop. The Nissan came to rest facing south in the southbound lane of U.S. 301.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
