Driver Dead After Car Lands in Retention Pond

He lost control of his car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man died Sunday (July 1) when his car ended up in a retention pond after he lost control of the vehicle on I-75, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Lawrence James McKiernan, 71, of Tampa, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 3:51 p.m. on northbound I-75 north of Fletcher Avenue. Troopers said Mr. McKiernan was driving a 1998 Mercedes SL north on I-75 when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the car. The car left the roadway, entered the grass shoulder, collided with a fence and overturned into a retention pond.
