Driver Critically Injured in Road Rage Related Crash, Pinellas Park Police Say
The injured driver was not involved in the road rage incident that led up to the crash, police said.
PINELLAS PARK – A Tampa man was critically injured Friday (May 26) when his car was hit by a pickup truck involved in an unrelated road rage incident, according to Pinellas Park police.
Timothy Ilyes, 52, of Tampa, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. He was listed in critical but stable condition late Friday, police said. The driver and passenger in the pickup truck were not injured.
The crash happened about 4:30 p.m. in the 10000 block of northbound 49th Street N in the area of the U.S. 19 overpass. Police said Anthony Powell, 30, of Pinellas Park, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northbound in the 8600 block of 49th when he became involved in a road rage incident with another truck.
Witnesses told police they saw the Chevy cutting off the unknown truck just before the crash. While underneath the U.S. 19 overpass, the Chev tried to cut off the second truck at which time, police said, Powell lost control of his truck. The Chevy crossed over the median and into the exit ramp lane for U.S. 19 at which time it collided with the 2000 Nissan Xtera that Ilyes was driving.
The Chevy flipped over and landed upside down. The Xterra was heavily damaged, police said.
The crash closed the road from about 4:30 p.m. until about 10 p.m.
The second truck involved in the road rage incident has not been identified and did not remain on scene. Police said there was no contact between the two trucks initially involved in the road rage incident.
Officers are working with the Pinellas County State Attorney’s Office because of the criminal nature of the investigation of the reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury to another. The investigation continues and charges are pending, police said.
Officers are asking for anyone with any information about any portion of the crash, road rage incident, or the identity or whereabouts of the other truck or driver, to call the Pinellas Park Police Department at (727) 369-7864.
