HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – An Orlando man was critically injured this morning (July 21) when the car he was driving hit the rear of a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue truck.

Joaquin Arturo Wilson, 26, of Orlando, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.

No firefighters were injured in the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened about 7:16 a.m. on westbound I-4 east of Branch Forbes Road. Troopers said the man, who was driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla, was following the fire truck, which was on its way to a vehicle crash in the I-4 median.

As the fire truck, which had its emergency lights on, reached the crash, it stopped partially along the inside paved shoulder and the inside travel lane. Troopers said that, while the fire crew was getting out of the truck, the Toyota failed to stop and hit the rear of the fire engine. Wilson became entrapped, but firefighters freed him.
