The deputy and his police dog were not injured. The other driver suffered minor injuries, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

PINELLAS PARK – A driver suffered minor injuries in a crash Sunday (May 13) with a deputy, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jeremy Whitney, 47, of New Port Richey, was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a minor injury and released. Whitney was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Neither Pinellas County Deputy Wyeth A. Whitehurst, 29, nor his K9 partner, Devon, were injured in the crash. Whitehurst has been with the sheriff’s office since August 2014.

The crash happened about 1:40 p.m. at the intersection of 49th Street N and 118th Avenue.

Deputies said Whitney was driving his 2017 Toyota Tacoma south in the right lane of 49th Street N approaching the intersection of 118th Avenue. Whitehurst was driving his fully marked 2018 Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Chevrolet Tahoe west on 118th Avenue with his lights and sirens activated to an emergency call for service.

Whitehurst slowed down and attempted to clear the intersection. Deputies said Whitney’s Toyota hit Whitehurst’s Chevrolet on the passenger side.

Deputies said speed on the part of Whitney was a possible factor in the crash.
