Driver Charged with DUI in I-4 Crash That Killed Motorcyclist

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Brandon motorcyclist died this morning (Feb. 22) of injuries he received in a crash on I-4, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Andy Jackson Sanford, 23, of Brandon, died at Tampa General Hospital where he was taken after the crash. He was not wearing a helmet, troopers said.

The other driver, Johnathon Dujuan Thompson, 39, of Fort Lauderdale was charged with DUI, Driving While License Cancelled or Suspended, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Death. He was not injured.

The crash happened about 1:45 a.m. on eastbound I-4 east of State Road 574 in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Sanford was driving a 2010 motorcycle east on I-4 when he overtook the 2018 Dodge Ram pickup truck Thompson was driving. The motorcycle hit the rear of the pickup, which left the scene, traveled north on I-75 then turned around and traveled south on I-75 until FHP troopers stopped him near the 268 milepost.
