Driver Accused of DUI After He Hits Man Lying in Road

He tried to avoid hitting the other man, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HERNANDO COUNTY – A Weeki Wachee man died this morning (July 21) when he was hit by a pickup truck while he was lying in a roadway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Paul Nicholas Leftwich, 38, of Weeki Wachee, died at the scene. He had not been drinking, troopers said.

Darryl Glenn Champion, 55, of Brooksville, was charged with driving under the influence. He was not injured in the crash.

The crash happened about 12:16 a.m. on Bourassa Boulevard east of U.S. 19 in Hernando County. Troopers said Champion was driving a 2010 Chevrolet pickup east on Bourassa when he saw Mr. Leftwich lying in the roadway. Champion tried to stop the pickup but was unsuccessful and hit Mr. Leftwich.
