A dog ran onto the highway causing a driver to slam on brakes. Another driver was unable to stop, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A St. Pete Beach woman died Monday (Dec. 18) in a traffic crash caused when she slammed on brakes to avoid a dog that had run onto I-275, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Mary Carnes Norloff, 70, of St. Pete Beach, died at the scene. Drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the crash were not injured.

The crash happened about 10:45 a.m. on northbound I-275 north of Fowler Avenue. Troopers said Ms. Norloff was driving a 2002 Toyota Echo north on I-275 when a dog ran onto the highway. Ms. Norloff slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting the dog.

Kenya Williams, 43, of Sanford, was driving a 2007 semi-tractor trailer north on I-275 behind Ms. Norloff. Williams was unable to slow or stop when Ms. Norloff slammed on brakes and the semi, which was towing an empty car-hauler trailer, hit the rear of the Toyota.

The impact pushed the Toyota into the inside lane. The semi continued moving and hit a 2005 Nissan Titan that was being driven by Diego Perez, 54, of Lutz.
