A 3-year-old child in the car was not injured, Tampa police said.

TAMPA – Police have charged a man with leaving the scene of a traffic crash that killed two people.

Tyronda Sampson, 23, and  Michael Wimbley, 28, both of Tampa, died in the crash. Ms.Sampson was the mother of a 3-year-old child who was in the vehicle. The child, who was properly restrained in a child seat, was not injured, the Tampa Police Department said. Occupants of a third vehicle involved in the crash received minor injuries.

Rico Taylor, 35, of Tampa, was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death and driving while license suspended. Police said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash. The results of blood alcohol tests are pending.

The crash happened about 11:23 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 15) at E Lake Avenue and N 34th Street. Ms. Sampson and Mr. Wimbley were in a 2003 Chevrolet traveling east on Lake. As the Chevrolet entered the intersection it was hit by a 2003 Infinity driven by Taylor, according to police. The force of the impact pushed the vehicles into a third vehicle that was stationary on 34th Street waiting to turn left.

Police said Taylor got out of the Infinity and fled the scene on foot. Officers captured him a short distance away.
