Two Die in Head-On Crash on U.S. 301

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Both drivers died in a head-on collision on U.S. 301 on Sunday (March 4), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Jose Z. Zertuche-Garcia, 53, of Wimauma, died at the scene. Brett Thomas Hitchcock, 40, of Parrish, also died at the scene.

The crash happened about 8:10 p.m. on U.S. 301 south of Saffold Road. Mr. Zertuche-Garcia was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 north on U.S. 301. Troopers said Mr. Hitchcock was driving a 2005 Toyota Tundra south on U.S. 301. For unknown reasons, the Tundra entered the northbound lane and the two trucks collided head on.
