Deputy Injured in Tierra Verde Crash
His SUV rolled over when it was hit, Pinellas deputies said. Passersby helped get him out of the vehicle.
TIERRA VERDE – A deputy was injured Saturday (March 30) when the SUV he was driving rolled over when a crossover hit it on Tierra Verde, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.
Pinellas sheriff’s Deputy Luis Guiral, 23, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with non-life threatening injuries.Guiral has worked for the Pinellas sheriff since Nov. 13, 2017. No one in the other vehicle was hurt.
The crash happened about 6:48 p.m. on the Pinellas Bayway S in front of the Fort De Soto Park boat ramp entrance in Tierra Verde.
Deputies said Guiral was on duty driving his fully marked 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe cruiser northbound on Pinellas Bayway S with his emergency lights on responding to a stolen vehicle in-progress call for service. Although he had emergency lights on, investigators said Guiral did not have his emergency siren on at the time of the crash.
As Guiral approached the entrance to the Fort De Soto Park boat ramp entrance, traffic stopped in front of him in the northbound lanes. He kept going north but got in the southbound lanes to pass the stopped traffic.
Investigators said 26-year-old Mariela Martin was driving a 2015 Lexus RX350 north on Pinellas Bayway S when she began making a left turn into the boat ramp parking lot. Martin’s Lexus struck the passenger side of Guiral’s Tahoe as he was trying to pass her vehicle.
The impact caused Guiral to lose control of the Tahoe and his cruiser overturned. Guiral’s Tahoe came to final rest on its passenger side in the southbound lane of Pinellas Bayway S.
Passersby helped extricate Guiral from his cruiser.
Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.
The investigation is continuing.
