Deputy Injured in 49th Street Crash
Neither speed nor impairment appears to be a factor in the crash, Pinellas deputies said.
PINELLAS PARK – A driver was cited this morning after she failed to yield to an oncoming deputy when turning off 49th Street N, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputy Eric Gibson, 51, was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The other driver, Lori M. Zimmerman, 35, of St. Petersburg, was also taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. She was cited for Failure to Yield – Approaching/Entering an Intersection.
The crash happened about 8:33 this morning (March 13) at the intersection of 49th Street N and 62nd Avenue in Pinellas Park.
Deputies said Gibson was on-duty and driving north on 49th approaching the intersection at 62nd Avenue in his fully marked Chevrolet Tahoe belonging to the sheriff’s office. Zimmerman was driving her 2015
Honda Pilot south on 49th. Zimmerman was in the left turn lane in preparation to turn east onto 62nd Avenue.
As Gibson entered the intersection at 49th Street and 62nd Avenue, Zimmerman failed to see his vehicle and proceeded to make an eastbound turn into Gibson’s path. Gibson’s Tahoe hit Zimmerman’s
SUV on the front corner of the passenger side, and the Honda overturned onto the driver’s side in the intersection.
Witnesses told deputies that Zimmerman had a flashing yellow arrow when she turned left in front of Gibson who had a solid green light.
Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.
