Alcohol was not a factor, FHP troopers said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Riverview man died Saturday (May 11) in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Rene Vasquez, 21, of Riverview, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, FHP troopers said.

The other driver, Jason Phong Nguyen, 31, of Parrish, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.

Neither driver had been drinking.

The crash happened about 11:57 p.m. on southbound U.S. 301 south of Bishop Road in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Vasquez was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 301 when he collided head on with the 2010 Hyundai Genesis that Nguyen was driving.
