The unidentified driver ran a stop sign then fled on foot, Tampa police said.

TAMPA – One person died today (April 14) in an early morning hit and run crash, the Tampa Police Department said.

Artemus Leon Holley, 52, died of injuries received in the crash. He was the only person in his car.

The crash happened about 2:10 a.m. at the intersection of N 26th Street and E Columbus Drive. Police said officers saw a Jeep being driven erratically with the headlights turned off in the area of N 22nd Street and 7th Avenue. The TPD officers activated emergency equipment to make a traffic stop, but the Jeep fled north on 22nd Street. The officers deactivated the emergency equipment and broke line of sight, as is TPD policy not to engage in a pursuit in such situations.

Minutes later, a crash happened at 26th and Columbus, involving the same Jeep police had spotted earlier driving without the headlights on. Police said the driver of the Jeep, which was rented, sped through a stop sign and collided with the other car.

The driver and passenger in the Jeep fled on foot. The passenger was detained a short time later and has not cooperated with police. The driver has not been located.
