One Dead, One Seriously Injured in Lithia Head-On Crash

Alcohol and drugs are suspected to be factors in this case, pending toxicology results, according to Hillsborough deputies.

LITHIA – A woman died and a man suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on crash on County Road 39, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Alexis Demere, 20, of Lithia, died at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from her car. The other driver, a 56-year-old man whose name was not available, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A passenger in Ms. Demere’s car was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital with minor injuries. A passenger in the other vehicle was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital-South with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 4:30 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 28) on CR 39 in Lithia.

Deputies said Ms. Demere was driving a 2012 Toyota Yaris south on CR 39 when she crossed the center line and hit a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado head on. The Toyota rotated counterclockwise before overturning and landing on the roof. The pickup truck rotated counterclockwise, eventually landing in a ditch.

Both vehicles were traveling at about 55 mph. Both suffered severe crush damage. The roadway was closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation.
