Two Dead in Fiery, Wrong-Way Crash on U.S. 301
Drivers of two of the three vehicles involved in the crash died at the scene, according to FHP troopers. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Two men died and a third suffered minor injuries early Sunday (April 14) in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Fernando Gomez Hernandez, 21, and William Burt Kresge, 26, died at the scene. Mr. Kresge, from Zephyrhills, was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said. The third driver, Cory Lee Morse, 26, of Plant City, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
The crash happened about 12:50 a.m. on U.S. 301 south of Stacy Road in Hillsborough County.
Troopers said Mr. Hernandez was driving a 2005 Ford E-Series van south on U.S. 301 when, for unknown reasons, he veered into the northbound lane and sideswiped a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Mr/ Kresge then collided head on with 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Morse.
After the impact, the Chevrolet left the road and overturned. The van left the roadway and burst into flames. The Ford stopped in the southbound lane.
