One Dead, One Critical After Hit and Run Crash on U.S. 301
The hit-and-run driver got out of his car and into a different car that left the scene, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man was killed, his female passenger was critically injured, and a child suffered minor injuries in a hit-and-run traffic crash on U.S. 301 this morning (Feb. 25), according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
It is unknown if the adults were wearing seat belts. The two children were restrained.
The crash happened about 11:20 a.m. on northbound U.S. 301 at Gerry Lane. Troopers said Mr. Patino-Villa was driving a 2002 Ford F150 north on U.S. 301. The Ford was overtaken by a 2014 Nissan Sentra driven by an unidentified man.
The Nissan failed to slow for the Ford and, as a result, rear-ended the pickup truck. The impact propelled the truck across the center raised concrete median and into the southbound travel lanes where it overturned. The truck came to a final rest along the outside grass shoulder.
The adults in the Ford were partially ejected from the truck.
After the crash, troopers said, the Nissan’s driver got out of his car and into a white Nissan passenger vehicle driven by a woman. They fled the scene. The driver was described as wearing red, white and black clothing.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the FHP by calling (813) 558-1800, or *FHP (*347), or Crime Stoppers.
