One Dead After Boat Capsizes Near Davis Islands

Another person was taken to the hospital and four were unharmed, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

TAMPA – One man died and another was taken to the hospital after a boat capsized Saturday (April 7) near Davis Islands, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

Alberto Marrero-Tamayo, 57, of Tampa, was rescued by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office marine unit but died of his injuries. Another person, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital. Four others were unharmed.

FWC officials said that at about 2 p.m. Saturday, 911 dispatchers received a call about a capsized boat on Hillsborough Bay near Davis Island in Hillsborough County. There were six people on board at the time of the incident.

MacDill AFB Marine Patrol, Tampa Police Department Air Support Unit, Tampa Fire Rescue, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit were first to arrive on scene. The sheriff’s marine unit rescued five of the boaters. One of them swam to shore and was rescued by the MacDill AFB Marine Patrol.

FWC is investigating.
