Crash from Tire Failure Kills Palm Harbor Man

He lost control of his car when the tire failed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A Palm Harbor man died Saturday (July 8) of injuries he suffered in a crash after one of his tires failed, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Gabriel A. Matthews, 20, of Palm Harbor, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was taken after the crash.

The crash happened about 6:41 p.m. on northbound I-275 north of Fourth Street N. Troopers said the left rear tire of the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier that Mr. Matthews was driving failed. As a result, Mr. Matthews lost control of the Chevrolet, which spun, left the road and collided with an overhead sign pole.
