Police Lights | Florida | TB Reporter

She was trying to pass in a no passing zone, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Wesley Chapel woman died Sunday (Dec. 17) of injuries she received in a traffic crash on Lutz Lake Fern Road, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Erica Kristen Rodriguez, 28, of Wesley Chapel, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa where she was taken after the crash. She had been wearing a helmet. No one else was injured.

The crash happened about 9:05 a.m. on Lutz Lake Fern Road just west of Sun Lake Boulevard. Deputies said Ms. Rodriguez was riding a 2014 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle east on Lutz Lake Fern with a small group of motorcycle riders. She entered the westbound lane while attempting to pass traffic across a double yellow line in a no passing zone.

She hit the driver’s side door of a 2017 Toyota Corolla driven by Michel M. Ghobrial, 39, of Lutz. Ghobrial, who was driving his family to church, was also headed east on Lutz Lake Fern. However, witnesses told deputies that Ghobrial had slowed and had activated his left turn signal to turn into a driveway when the crash happened. Deputies said he was making a left turn because the Ghobrials were returning home to get something they’d forgotten.

No charges are pending, deputies said.
