Extensive repairs are needed to the roadway after the crash caused both a spill of diesel fuel and highway paint. The Florida Highway Patrol said should expect “significant” delays on southbound I-75 south of Gibsonton Drive.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A traffic crash on I-75 south of Gibsonton Road closed a segment of the road overnight and is expected to continue causing “significant” while the road is repaired, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Travis Earl Blue, 41, of Union Springs, AL, the driver of a 2007 Kenworth semi-tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital. FHP troopers cited Blue for careless driving. No one else was injured in the crash.

The crash happened about 11:10 p.m. Sunday (March 25) on southbound I-75 south of Gibsonton Drive. Troopers said Blue lost control of his semi and tried to avoid a collision with a 2007 dump truck driven by Albert Johns Jr., 57, of Riverview. The semi hit a crash cushion being towed by the dump truck, then hit a trailer towed by a 2008 dump truck driven by Christopher Reid, 42, of Tampa.

The impact of that collision propelled the dump truck onto the paved shoulder of the road where it hit the rear of a 2013 truck driven by George Johnson II, 32, of Plant City.

The semi jacknifed and came to a final rest in the center lane of southbound I-75. The other vehicles came to rest along the outside shoulder.

After the collisions, troopers said, the roadway paint that the semi was hauling spilled on the road as did diesel fuel. That portion of the roadway was closed until about 5 a.m. today (March 26) when the outside southbound lane was re-opened.

Troopers said extensive repairs are needed to the roadway, so motorists should expect “significant” southbound delays. They advise that drivers use U.S. 301 and U.S. 41 as alternate travel routes.
