ST. PETERSBURG – A Clearwater man was arrested Wednesday (March 13) after he left the scene of a crash that seriously injured a pedestrian, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

The name of the injured man is being withheld until his next of kin are notified. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Luis Xavier Gonzalez, 32, of Clearwater, was charged with one count each of Resisting an Office with Violence (Obstruction), Driving with License Suspended or Revoked (Third Offense), and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Serious Bodily Injury.

Police said Gonzalez was driving a 1997 Honda sedan south on 34th Street N in the median lane when he hit a man who was crossing the roadway.

Gonzalez failed to stop to render aid and left the scene, officers said. Police officers were in the vicinity of the crash when it happened and maintained sight of the car.

Police caught Conzalez a short time later.

Alcohol is not a factor in the crash.
