They were taken to the hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries, the Tampa Police Department said.

TAMPA – Two children were hurt Tuesday (Oct. 16) when they were hit by a car while crossing E Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Tampa Police Department said.

The names of the children and of the driver who hit them were not available. They were taken to an area hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the incident happened about 5:09 p.m. on E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near N Mayfield Avenue. The driver of the car that struck the children remained at the scene and cooperated with police. The driver has not been charged.

Police said the 12-year-old boy and his 7-year-old sister were trying to cross Martin Luther King during rush hour traffic. The children were not crossing at a crosswalk. They were crossing in a northbound direction, and had successfully crossed the eastbound lanes. Some of the westbound lanes stopped, but in the last lane, a driver did not see the children and struck them as they entered his lane.
