PINELLAS COUNTY – Two children were critically injured in a head-on crash Sunday (Sept. 24), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Marquell Norfleet, 7, and Maurice Norfleet, 6, were taken to All Children’s Hospital with critical injuries. Both are from St. Petersburg and both were in child restraints.

The driver, Karen Candice Thaxton, 32, of Seminole, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

The other driver, Micah Donovan Callahan, 26, of Jacksonville, was not injured.

The crash happened about 3:52 p.m. on Starkey Road (County Road 1) south of 102nd Avenue N in the Seminole area of Pinellas County. Thaxton was driving north on Starkey when she traveled over standing water in the roadway. The 2006 Chevrolet Equinox she was driving had tires with minimal tread. As a result, troopers said, Thaxton lost control of the Chevrolet, which crossed the center median and collided head on with the 2001 Toyota Rav4 that Callahan was driving.

After the impact, Marquell was thrown from the Chevrolet.
