Child Dies in Six-Car Hernando Crash

Four others involved in the crash were seriously injured, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HERNANDO COUNTY – A 9-year-old boy died Thursday (Sept. 15) in a six-car chain reaction crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Logan Andrew Scherer, 9, of Riverview, died at the scene. Three others in the car were seriously injured: Jordan Michael Scherer, 37; Brooke Nichole Scherer, 35; and Mallory Harper Scherer, 5, all of Riverview. Also seriously injured was the driver of another vehicle, Gregory M. Andriotis, 33, of Deltona. All were taken to St. Joseph’s Main Hospital.

The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. on I-75 at the 302 mile marker. Northbound traffic was moving slowly or stopped because of another crash in the northbound lanes at the 305 mile marker, the FHP said. Andriotis failed to stop the 2012 Hyundai Genesis he was driving and hit a 2016 Mazda CX5 carrying the Scherers. The Mazda hit a 2016 Nissan Sentra driven by Kyle Anderson, 27, of Elgin, SC. The Nissan hit a 2015 Jeep SUV driven by Harold Jones, 62, of St. Petersburg. The Jeep hit a 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by Larry Smith, 27, of Spring Hill. The Dodge hit a 2007 Volvo S60 driven by Russell Wright, 48, of Ocala, troopers said.
