Child Dies in Christmas Eve Hillsborough Crash

One driver failed to yield right of way, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – An 11-year-old boy died Saturday (Dec. 24) in a traffic crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Daniel J. Morales, 11, of Thonotosassa, died at the scene. Magdalena Morales, 26, also of Thonotosassa, received minor injuries and was taken to Tampa General Hospital. The driver and a passenger in the other car also sustained minor injuries but were not taken to hospitals, the FHP said.

The crash happened about 2:25 p.m. at U.S. 301 and Walker Road in Thonotosassa. Magdalena Morales was driving a 2003 Saturn Ion south on Walker Road approaching U.S. 301. She failed to yield while trying to cross U.S. 301, troopers said. The Saturn entered the path of a 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio driven by Joy L. Confer, 53, of Riverview. The Volkswagen collided with the Saturn.
