The boy darted in front of an oncoming SUV, according to the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office.

PLANT CITY – A 6-year-old boy received life-threatening injuries this morning (Feb. 3) after he was hit by an SUV when he darted into the roadway, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Elijah Gonzalez Cruz, 6, of Plant City, was taken by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital. His condition late this morning was listed as critical but stable, deputies said.

The crash happened about 7 a.m. on Forbes Road. Deputies said Elijah was waiting to cross the street for the bus stop. As a lawn care truck passed, the child darted into the path of a 2003 Jeep Liberty driven by Shirley Bowman, 69, of Thonotosassa. Bowman did not have time to avoid the crash and struck Elijah.

Deputies said Bowman was fully cooperative and provided a voluntary blood draw. No charges are expected, they said.
