HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Brandon motorcyclist died Monday (Oct. 1) in a crash on Hillsborough Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Ryan James Simpson, 39, of Brandon, died at the scene. Felipe Mendoza, 41, of Tampa, the other driver, was not injured.

The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection Hillsborough Avenue and Orient Road in Hillsborough County.

Troopers said Mr. Simpson was riding a 2001 Honda motorcycle west on Hillsborough Avenue. He was in between the travel lanes passing other vehicles that were stopped for a red light.

The motorcycle ran the red light and hit the right front of the 2017 Nissan pickup truck that Mendoza was driving. The pickup was trying to turn from Orient Road onto Hillsborough.
