PINELLAS COUNTY – A bicyclist died early this morning (May 31) when hit by two vehicles in a traffic crash on Ulmerton Road.

The first vehicle to hit the bicycle rider did not stop, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Robert Allen Shepherd, 62, of St. Petersburg, died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. on westbound Ulmerton east of 58th Street N. Troopers said the bicyclist, who was in the westbound bike lane, was wearing a reflective vest and had his lights on when an unknown vehicle collided with him. It is unclear, troopers said, why the unknown vehicle hit the bike.

That vehicle left the scene and the bicyclist and bike landed in the roadway where troopers said they were hit by a 2011 GMC SUV driven by Michael Alejandro Flores, 30, of Trinity.

Troopers said they found debris left on the scene by the unknown vehicle. A side mirror that was found could belong to a 2003-2008 model Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix, or Toyota Corolla. Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to contact the FHP at *FHP (*347), (813) 631-4020, or Crime Stoppers at 800-873-TIPS (8477).
