The new traffic pattern will become effective after this morning’s rush hour.

ST. PETERSBURG – After days of utility re-location and rerouting of traffic lanes, the 40th Avenue NE Bridge will be open for two-way traffic starting at 10 a.m. today (Aug. 23).

One lane of eastbound and one lane of westbound traffic will be shifted to the outer edges of the bridge, so that engineers can more closely inspect the interior and center pieces of the span.

“This modification of traffic allows us the room to work safely,” St. Petersburg Engineering Director Brejesh Prayman said. “It also allows traffic to work both east- and westbound at the same time restoring access for residents.”

Traffic will be able to use the bridge after the morning rush hour to allow drivers to get used to the new pattern for a few hours before the afternoon traffic picks up.

Drivers are advised to proceed with caution and adhere to the reduced speed limit of 15 mph. Pedestrians are advised to utilize alternate routes.

Trucks using the bridge are required to strictly adhere to the posted weight limits and reduced speeds.
