34th Street Crash Kills Man in Wheelchair

He died 12 days after the crash, according to St. Petersburg police.

ST. PETERSBURG – A man died Thursday (Sept. 27) of injuries he received in a traffic crash while he was crossing 34th Street N, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Ronald Alan Ballew, 64, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life-threatening injuries, which were later downgraded to serious injuries. However, his health declined over the following week and Thursday, he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

Th crash happened about 8 p.m. Sept. 15. Police said Mr. Ballew, who was in a wheelchair, was crossing 34th Street N from east to west in the 1200 block when he entered the path of an approaching 2005 Kia, driven by Sheila Jones Cunningham, 34.

The front of the Kia struck the right side of Ballew, throwing him to the roadway, police said.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor in this crash, but police said the investigation is ongoing because of Mr. Ballew’s recent death.
