USF Football Player in Stable Condition after Shooting, Tampa Police Say

University of South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs was injured Saturday night in what Tampa police are calling a road rage shooting.

TAMPA – University of South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs was shot Saturday (March 25) night at an apartment complex, Tampa police said.

Childs, 22, was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Police said they were called to the Eagles Point Apartments, 14551 N 46th St., about 11:16 p.m. for a report of gunshots. Upon arriving, police said they discovered what appeared to be a road rage incident that resulted in one man being shot three times.

Jovanni Jimenez, 26, told police that Childs had pointed a gun at him and his wife, Jennifer, 31. Jimenez told police that he shot Childs in self defense.

At this time, police said no charges have been filed against either party and it is unclear what started the confrontation. The case is under investigation.

Childs, a resident of Kissimmee, is a graduate of Osceola High School where he helped Osceola to a 13-1 record, a district tile and a berth in the state semifinals, according to information from USF. He was selected to play in the Central Florida All-Star game, ranked 41st in the Orlando Sentinel’s Super 60, was a second-team 7A all-state selection by the Associated Press as a senior and was tabbed first-team all-Central Florida. Childs was also a first-team all-conference pick and tabbed Defensive Player of the Year by the Osceola News-Gazette.

In 2015, his redshirt season, he injured his knee during fall camp and missed the entire season. Last season, he totaled 16 tackles in eight games and posted career highs with five tackles against ECU and Navy.
