CLEARWATER – Clearwater Threshers capped off a record-setting month by clinching the second-half title in the Florida State League North division after beating the Jupiter Hammerheads 2-1 on Wednesday night (Aug. 29) at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter.

They will host the first-half champion Daytona Tortugas at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 4)  at Spectrum Field to kick off a best-of-three series with the winner advancing to the Florida State League Championship.

The Threshers (43-22) (75-58) clinched behind a dominant pitching performance from Dominican right-hander Adonis Medina (10-4, 4.12), and center fielder Kevin Markham’s seventh inning go-ahead two-run single. Medina, a 2018 Futures Games participant and the Phillies #3 ranked prospect according to MLB.com, hurled seven innings of one-run ball allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Addison Russ struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win and record his 14th save of the season. Clearwater has now gone 21-8 in the month of August – the highest win total in any given month in their 15-year history.

Pujols Named Florida State League Player of the Year

Clearwater outfielder Jose Pujols has been named 2018 Florida State League Player of the Year as part of the end-of-season All-Star list announced by the league on Tuesday. Threshers second year manager Shawn Williams was also honored by the league as a coach selection, while Dunedin Blue Jays right-hander Patrick Murphy was named Pitcher of the Year.

Pujols, who was promoted to Double-A Reading on August 3rd, hit .301 with a .508 slugging percentage, 18 home runs and 58 runs batted in during his 95 games with Clearwater. Despite his promotion, he still ranks second in the FSL in batting average and slugging percentage and fourth in home runs. Defensively, he is tied for the league-lead with 11 outfield assists. The 22-year-old Dominican has hit a combined .294 on the year between his two minor league stops and has totaled 22 home runs and 76 runs batted in.
