The walls are up, cars are arriving and the races begin Friday (March 10).

ST. PETERSBURG — Thirteen races in various classes will take place Friday through Sunday this week (March 10-12) on a downtown waterfront course, as the Firestone Grand Prix returns one of the nation’s major motorsports events to the city.

The featured event is the Verizon Indy Car Race on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. It is 110 laps on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn course, which is constructed around Al Lang Stadium and Mahaffey Theater at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts. It includes parts of Bayshore Drive and uses Runway 7/25 at Albert Whitted Airport as the front straightaway. The Verizon IndyCar Series is considered the premier open-wheel racing series in the United States.

There are also events for trucks, Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and several other racing classes. You can even try a footrace. The Grand Prix 5K takes place downtown starting at North Straub Park at 6:15 p.m. Friday.

You can find more details and more information about the races, various ticket prices, parking, street closures, race-related activities and much more at the Grand Prix web site.
