SPC Men’s Basketball Team Qualifies for National Tournament

The Titans won the state championship when they defeated Eastern Florida State College. They will go to the NJCAA tournament next week (March 20-25).

PINELLAS COUNTY – A win against Eastern Florida State College on Sunday (March 12) clinched the state championship for the St. Petersburg College Titans men’s basketball team and a berth in next week’s NJCAA championship.

The Titans were down by 8 points at the half during Sunday’s game, but came back to out score Eastern Florida 19 to 37 in the second half winning the game 59 to 69. In addition to winning the State Championship, the Titans received the following athletic and academic awards:

 

 

  • Hal Chasey Scholar Athlete Award:      Tristan Owens
  • Tournament Most Valuable Player:       Jason Burnell
  • State of Florida Player of the Year:       Jason Burnell
  • 1st Team All-State Team :                      Jason Burnell
  • All-Conference Team:                           Jason Burnell, Ahmad Clark, Cezanne Carson, Tristan Owens

Now the team will prepare for the National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena March 20-25.

The 70th NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship marks the 69th consecutive year the event will be hosted by Hutchinson and organized and directed by the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68. The Tournament features the top 24 teams in Division I men’s basketball of the NJCAA. The single-elimination seeded bracket is comprised of 16 District Champions, four at-large selections and four ‘zone’ qualifiers. The top eight seeds receive first-round byes.
