PINELLAS COUNTY – The Pinellas County Commission on Tuesday (April 24) unanimously to approve an agreement partnering with the city of Dunedin and the Toronto Blue Jays to financially support improvements to the team’s spring training facilities.

Prospective upgrades to the Blue Jays’ Dunedin complex include an increased seating capacity to about 8,500, additional food and beverage options, a new HD video board and expanded stadium parking.

The Blue Jays have headquartered in Dunedin for spring training since their inception as a Major League Baseball franchise in 1977. It is the only franchise to have never changed spring training facilities.

“We have the opportunity to perpetuate a partnership that we’ve had for decades that brings great value to our community,” Commission Chair Ken Welch said. “It’s a positive step for Pinellas County.”

Officials said that studies show the club and the thousands of fans it draws to Pinellas County each year have a $92 million annual economic impact. In addition to increased visitation, the county will receive additional marketing rights during spring training and during the regular season in Toronto.

The estimated $81 million project includes a contribution by the county not to exceed $41.7 million. The county contribution is funded through Tourist Development Tax revenue.

The agreement aligns with the county’s strategic goal to foster continual economic growth and vitality.
