Hernando’s Bayport Pier Expected to Reopen in 2018

A plan to repair the fishing pier, which was severely damaged in 2016, is going out to bid soon.

HERNANDO COUNTY – The long-awaited reconstruction of the Bayport Pier is expected to be completed in 2018, according to Hernando County officials.

In 2016, the pier suffered significant damage during Hurricane Hermine. The process to receive FEMA funding delayed the reconstruction; however, the project is now in the design phase and will be going out for bid shortly.

County officials said they apologize for the limited assess currently the pier at Bayport Park. and appreciate residents’ patience.

Located at 4140 Cortez Blvd., Bayport Park is a seven-acre Hernando County public park that sits on the Gulf of Mexico at the west end of State Road 50. It Includes a 144-foot scenic boardwalk along the coastline, shelters, picnic tables, pavilions, barbecue grills, restrooms, the Bayport-Linda Pedersen Paddling Trail, historic markers and two boat ramps.

Popular activities include fishing, crabbing, bird and wildlife watching, picnicking and photography. The park offers scenic views of the Gulf of Mexico, salt marshes and cabbage palm islands.
