Astronaut Nicole Stott, a Clearwater native, will be the keynote speaker at MOSI’s Women in Space event later this month.

TAMPA – Clearwater native Nicole Stott will share stories of her path to space, her life as an astronaut and artist, and the pioneering role of female explorers during NASA Legends: Women in Space at the Museum of Science & Industry.

The award-winning IMAX® film A Beautiful Planet, which was filmed by Stott’s fellow astronauts on the International Space Station, is also part of the special event, which is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 22 at MOSI, 4801 E Fowler Ave.  The cost for nonmembers is $20; MOSI members, $15.

Guests with a ticket to the Women in Space presentation can also add-on an optional meet-and-greet opportunity from noon to 1:30 p.m. to get an autograph, take a photo, and spend time one-on-one with Stott, who earned the nickname “the Artistic Astronaut” after becoming the first person to paint a work of art in space.A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Spacesuit Art Project. Add-on tickets are $25.

Nicole Stott | Astronaut | NASA“I’m so excited to be in my hometown of Tampa Bay to talk about the women who helped inspire me to explore what’s ‘out there.’ There are so many great stories to share, and I’ll also be able to talk about my own experiences of what it’s like to go from being a little girl in Clearwater to someone who has been fortunate enough to experience the awe of our incredible home planet from space,” Stott said.

Stott used a paint set she had tucked into her luggage to create a brilliant, swirling watercolor painting of islands in the Caribbean Sea — while carefully keeping floating drops of water from damaging the $100 billion International Space Station. It became the first work of art painted by a human in space.

During Women in Space, Stott will talk about combining her loves of art and aviation into a career as a NASA astronaut, the three months she spent living 220 miles above the earth aboard the International Space Station, and the influential roles women have played in the exploration of space.

Women in Space is the latest event in MOSI’s NASA Legends series, which brings NASA’s space pioneers to Tampa Bay. It also coincides with the final weeks of Cardboard Space Adventures, MOSI’s giant summer experience combining imagination and exploration, which ends Aug. 13.

Tickets are available at mosi.org or by calling MOSI at (813) 987-6000.
