Haley Veterans Hospital to Break Ground on $148.6 -Million Project

TAMPA – James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Bed Tower construction project Tuesday, July 31 at 10 a.m. in front of the hospital’s main entrance.

Speakers will include Medal of Honor Recipient Gary Littrell; U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa; and Gus Bilirakis, R-Tarpon Springs; and senior officials from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The groundbreaking ceremony kicks off the three-year construction project for the hospital’s new Bed Tower, a four-story building that, when completed, will add 245,000 square feet of new space and another 5,000 square feet of renovated space to the hospital. It will include 96 medical-surgical single patient rooms and 40 intensive care unit beds. It will also include space for a new cafeteria, outdoor dining area and retail store, as well as assorted support offices.

Total cost of the design-build project will be $148.6 million. This is the first major design-build construction project managed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for VA under recently approved Congressional legislation.
