A Taste of Science is a national project that seeks to bring scientists out of their labs and into real-life settings. This year’s Tampa Bay Taste of Science will have events on both sides of the Bay.

TAMPA BAY – Join Tampa Bay area scientists at local breweries, restaurants, beaches and gardens and hear them share new findings of their research and how it relates to our daily lives.

This year’s Taste of Science Tampa Bay will have events on both sides of Tampa Bay and will also have morning events in St. Petersburg as well as a child-friendly event on Saturday (April 27) at the University of South Florida Botanical Gardens for a day of interactive exhibitions for all ages, or on April 28 at Gandy Beach for a cleanup. Taste of Science runs from Monday (April 22) through April 28.

Tampa line-up highlights:

  • Myths and Facts about the Death Penalty in America with Dr. John Cochran
  • Mars: Your Personal Journey to the Red Planet with Dr. Antonio Paris
  • The Science Behind Offender Profiling and Criminal Psychology with Dr. Bryanna Fox
  • How has Pregnancy Evolved? with Dr. Derek Wildman

St. Pete line-up highlights:

  • The Psychology of Breaking Bad Habits with Dr. Katurah Jenkins-Hall
  • Bots…Robotics That Is! with Dr. Sandra Vernon-Jackson
  • Subglacial Lake Science: From Space Lasers to Sediments with Ryan Venturelli

Taste of Science is a national attempt to address the widening gulf between what scientists do and what public perception is. Misinformation from memes and stories from unknown news sources have contributed to this. Scientists too have been guilty of failing to communicate their work in a way that is easy to understand, if they’ve tried to communicate at all.

Taste of Science organizers say they think their events are a valuable way of informing the non-scientific audience of the important work taking place in their local communities by their friendly neighborhood scientists. It is also a way for scientists to connect with the people benefiting from their research; to remind them what the big picture is.

The group’s biggest event is the annual Taste of Science festival that takes place simultaneously in cities across the U.S. The group brings researchers out of their labs, away from their computers or in from their fieldwork to present their work to people in places where they already go to discuss, to listen to each other, to interact with, and to contemplate the world.

This is an opportunity for participants to go straight to the source on subjects that you’d often only read or hear about in the news. A chance to hear someone describe what goes on behind closed doors, and a chance to question them about it.
