Should St. Petersburg leaders plan for a sustainable future or return to the status quo? That’s the question speakers at a sustainability conference will ask.

ST. PETERSBURG – The St. Petersburg Sustainability Council will gather a coalition of respected local non-profit organizations focused on defining and creating a sustainable future for St. Petersburg.

The success of life in this city depends on the economic, environmental, and social equity connections that can thrive under the umbrella of sustainability in our city, and the city’s elected leadership must reflect those values. The risks associated with failure to plan for a sustainable future are just too great, and retreat is not an option, the council says.

Among the speakers at Wednesday’s (July 12) event are St. Petersburg Council Member Karl Nurse, Dr. Steve Diasio of the Suncoast Sierra Club, and Steve Plice of the Sustainable Communities Renaissance Project.

The event will be 10 a.m. at Maximo Park, 6499 34th St. S. Take the Pinellas Point Drive exit (#16) off I-275 South (last exit before Skyway – don’t miss it!). Turn right at bottom of the exit ramp and continue into Maximo Park. Organizers say the location includes excellent visuals of Boca Ciega Bay, the impacts of sea rise and the coastal restoration project.
