City Council member Darden Rice, two re-purposed service stations, Sunken Gardens, and several outstanding houses were among the honorees. 

ST. PETERSBURG — The city’s leading preservation organization has honored 22 people, programs and structures that have contributed to St. Petersburg’s appearance, character and charm. City Council member Darden Rice was presented St. Petersburg Preservation’s President’s Award for her consistent support of the organization’s goals.And four awards went to honorees in historic African American neighborhoods.

The catered awards event was held at the St. Petersburg Woman’s Club last week. Bob Jeffrey, a previous winner, was honored in the Multi-Family Restoration or Rehabilitation category. Jeffrey’s project in Historic Kenwood almost always produces laughter at the mention of its name: the Costa Lotta Apartments.

Award of Honor Residential Stewardship: Kent and Joan Ulrich, Thomas Whitted House, 656 First St. N.

Award of Honor Commercial Stewardship: Yates Barbershop, 1235 22^nd St. S.

Award of Honor Contribution to Neighborhood Preservation: Elihu and Carolyn Brayboy, Chief’s Creole Cafe, 22nd Street S.

Award of Honor Education or Publication: Will Michaels, Historic Preservation Column in Old Northeast Journal and author of Hidden History of St. Petersburg. 

Award of Honor Keep St. Pete Special: St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

Award of Honor Living Traditions: Flamingos Forever Project, Sunken Garden Forever Foundation

Award of Honor Hands on Preservation: Steve Quillian, Historic Homes Workshop and Wood Window Makeover.
