The tasty bivalves can be harvested along sections of the Gulf through Sept. 25.

GULF OF MEXICO — In a popular activity that annually draws thousands from around the state, scallop season opens Saturday (June 27) in the Gulf in an area from the Pasco-Hernando county line to the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County. The open harvest runs through Sept. 25.

The Anclote River and Tampa Bay are closed to scalloping. Scallop populations in these areas remain sensitive and are prone to collapse, says the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

State biologists encourage scallopers to report their harvest data. Learn more about that survey and more about the scallop season at  myfwc.com/research.
