A workshop has been scheduled to teach people how to start building a movement to reverse what organizers call “the rapidly growing gap between the super-rich and ordinary workers.”

ST. PETERSBURG – Runaway inequality is now America’s most critical economic fact of life, according to organizers of an upcoming workshop.

In 1970, the ratio of pay between the top 100 CEOs and the average worker was 45 to 1. In the current decade, it is 800 to 1. During the time in between, a new economic philosophy set in that cut taxes, deregulated finance, and trimmed social spending. Those policies set in motion a process that greatly expanded the power of financial interests to accelerate inequality. But how exactly does that happen?

The St Petersburg Society of Friends (Quakers) Peace and Social Concerns Committee and the Pinellas Chapter of the Network of Spiritual Progressives are hosting an  interactive workshop based on Reversing Runaway Inequality -An Activists Guide to Economic Justice by Les Leopold. Participants get a crash course in the rapidly growing gap between the super-rich and ordinary workers. They learn how the ever-growing power of hedge funds and private equity managers has put our government in thrall to the billionaire class and contributed to environmental devastation, racial discrimination, an outsized prison population, and plummeting wages.

The training is about showing the inter-connectedness between all the issues that face people, and showing how they’re tied together through this runaway inequality, financial strip-mining model. We all have our special interests, our passions- homelessness, poverty, women’s rights, etc, but this workshop will show how we can all unite and become stronger and more powerful together.
