Futurist David Houle predicts that “‘reality’ as we know it today will end.”

SEMINOLE – An internationally known futurist who predicts that the next 20 years will be as transformative as any similar period in history will be the featured speaker at the next Dinner Series program of the Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions at St. Petersburg College.

David Houle, who has delivered his startling message of disruptive change on all continents, will bring it to SPC’s Seminole Campus Conference Center from 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Nov. 1. The program, titled The Shift Age: A Futurist’s View of 2017-2040. Advance registration is required.

Houle, author of seven books, has won numerous awards including Speaker of the Year award from Vistage International, the world’s leading organization of CEOs. He is often called the “CEOs’ futurist,” having spoken to or advised 2,500-plus CEOs and business owners in the past seven years.

Referring to his predictions about the next 20 years, Houle wrote in a recent newspaper column that “future historians may well look back on this time as a historical transit as significant as the beginning of the Industrial Revolution or the Renaissance.”  Considering that the former launched the Machine Age and the latter the Enlightenment, that statement ought to send chills up the spines of sociologists, urban planners and policy-makers. For it foretells a period in which virtually every area of current life will be changed.

As Houle bluntly puts it, “That means that it will be disconcerting, disorienting, disruptive and that ’reality’ as we know it today will end. This of course means that a significant percentage of humanity will have great psychological upset . . . ”

Among Houle’s predictions:

  • 50 percent of all current jobs and professions will disappear because of artificial intelligence and big data.
  • The average life span will increase to 100 years, and a maximum of 125 to 150 years will be possible.
  • Renewable energy will overtake fossil fuel-generated energy.
  • Climate change will create tens of millions of refugees per year and trillions of dollars of economic loss.

Other Houle predictions deal with transformation of education, religion, the stock market, and geopolitics.

Registration for the dinner and program is $20 for students and educators and $25 for all others. To register, go to solutions.spcollege.edu.
