Oldsmar was the only Tampa Bay city in the Top 10. Safety Harbor, Dunedin and Seminole made the Top 50.

OLDSMAR – The city of Oldsmar was recently named the Eighth Safest City in the State of Florida by SafeWise, a resource for all things safety and security.

The Top 50 cities were identified by SafeWise analysts, who examined the number of violent crimes reported in the 2017 FBI Unified Crime Report, the most recent data available. They also calculated the number of violent crime incidents per 1,000 people in each city. Analysts established population thresholds, and, in the event of a tie, property crimes were considered.

“To be the only Tampa Bay city in the Top 10 is quite an honor,” Oldsmar Mayor Eric Seidel said.  “Oldsmar is proud to provide a safe community for our residents. One way we provide a high level of service is through our dedicated Community Policing Officers with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.  They engage with Oldsmar’s residents at a personal level and truly have a pulse on our neighborhoods.”

SafeWise released their fifth annual Safest Cities report this month. All 50 cities limited violent crime to fewer than 2.5 incidents per 1,000 people, which is nearly half the national violent crime rate of 4.49.  Florida overall is a bit over the national rate, coming in at 4.81 incidents per 1,000 people. The rate for Oldsmar is 0.89.

Regarding property crime, the state’s rate is 31.88, which is higher than the national rate of 27.11. But only 14 percentof the cities on the SafeWise list have rates higher than the national average. Oldsmar is listed at 20.31.

Although Oldsmar is the only Tampa Bay municipality in the Top 10, three other bay area cities made the Top 50: Safety Harbor (No. 15), Dunedin (No. 27), and Seminole (No. 43).
